Creating and Implementing Green Plans: How Countries are Succeeding

This day-long intensive is for top-level decision-makers in government, business, and civil society who are working to shift public policy toward this established, successful approach to environmental management, particularly regarding the causes and effects of climate change. After the conference, next steps will include a White Paper and an ongoing program of outreach to policy makers.

Confirmed speakers to date include:

  • Herman Sips, Senior Policy Advisor, Dutch Ministry for Housing, Spatial Planning & the Environment, coordinates international policy and diplomacy on natural resources, sustainable production and consumption, and biodiversity. He drove the first Dutch NEPP; was a key negotiator at the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development; and now is involved in international negotiations on financing and climate change, a building block to a global agreement. He is a representative to the European Environment Bureau, which confers with the EU Parliament on environmental policy.

  • Hans van Zijst, Netherlands' environmental representative while in government; participant in the formation of the third Netherlands Environmental Policy Plan; founder and director of Policy in Context.

  • Dr. Tom Fookes, Architect of New Zealand's Green Plan, which united liberal and conservative politics; Deputy Commissioner, New Zealand Environmental Court; Associate Professor, Department of Planning, National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries, University of Auckland.

  • Martha Delgado, Minister of Environment, Mexico City DF, is one of the most prominent environmental leaders in Mexican politics today. Her leadership has included the Confederation of Environmentalist Groups representing 85 NGOs from across Mexico; the National Ecology Institute where she served as advisor to the President; and the Mexican Citizen Presence Organization, which observed the 2000 presidential elections.

The forum will delineate how Green Plans function, why they are succeeding, and how they can be replicated here in the United States. International experts from various Green Planning governments will document case studies from same and will lead extensive question and answer sessions. Topics include: how Green Plans function, why they are succeeding at managing resources including causes of climate change, and how they can be replicated here in the U.S.

The daylong conference includes a signed copy of Green Plans, Blueprint for a Sustainable Earth; lunch provided; and a wine & cheese reception at the conclusion of the conference. There will be breaks during the day for guests to greet each other.
